Light, you will damn well walk with me

There are photographs I take without fully understanding why.

They arise instinctively — gestures, movements, moments captured long before interpretation has had time to settle. Meaning, I’ve learned, is sometimes a patient thing.

Some images speak immediately.
Others wait.

This one waited.

I made the photograph while putting up the Advent lights at the end of November last year. An ordinary evening shaped by ritual and play, where the quiet seasonal glow met the surrounding winter darkness.

Light against shadow — an old fascination.

Only months later, revisiting the image, did the words appear:

“Light, you will damn well walk with me.”

Not quite a command.
More like something murmured inwardly.

Because what surfaced was not a memory of Advent, but of a familiar pattern.

The many times I have sensed tensions before they fully emerged. Softened edges. Adjusted tone. Slipped almost automatically into the role of mediator, harmoniser, quiet regulator of atmospheres.

And with it, that subtle, persistent flicker of unease
when harmony slipped out of reach.

In those moments, I would sometimes clench my teeth,
almost instinctively,
and murmur inwardly:

Light, you will damn well walk with me.

Not as defiance —
but as a small private incantation,
summoning calm,
summoning order,
summoning light
where it seemed to falter.

Seen now, the image feels like a sequence.

First, distance — the black and white rendering, where the moment belongs to reflection, to memory.

Then recognition — the world subdued, while the light itself remains in colour, stepping forward as presence rather than decoration.

And finally, return — colour re-entering the frame, not as embellishment but as reintegration.

Because somewhere along the way, and perhaps only with time, something has begun to shift.

Not dramatically.
Not loudly.

More like a quiet internal recalibration.

A growing understanding that peace does not have to be purchased at the expense of one’s own presence.

That light is not only something I create for others —

but something I am learning
to walk beside myself.
